Why adopt a duck?
The Food Bank began the "O! What a Duck Race!" as a way to raise funds for The Food Bank. We wanted to create a fun and free community event that increased the awareness of hunger in our
community.
In Douglas County, 53,000 people live below the poverty line - and 16,800 of those are children.
The Food Bank is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger in Nebraska and
western Iowa through community collaboration, making the best possible use of all available
resources.
The Food Bank collects food nationally as a member of Feeding America, a national network of
food banks and food manufacturers. The Food Bank also collects food locally through food drives and from local food manufacturers, food distributors and grocery stores.
Food is distributed to people in 77 Nebraska counties and 16 western Iowa
counties.
The Food Bank distributes food to people in need through partner agencies. More than 300 partner agencies receive food
from The Food Bank which is then distributed to people who are hungry - food pantries, meal
providers, emergency shelters, low-income child care centers and senior citizen programs are all examples of these partner agencies.
Food is also delivered to individuals and families via programs designed and operated by The Food Bank. Direct Service programs include: The Food Bank for Kids BackPack Program, the Senior Outreach Program, Kids Cafés, The Food Bank Fresh Truck and a partnership with Holy Family Sack Lunch Program.
